The Purpose of Coating

Correct selection of coating is the prerequisite for rational use of coated tools and full use of coating functions. The following is a three-point basis for the selection of PVD coatings. First of all, it still depends on the classification and hardness of the workpiece material. Generally speaking, TiN and TiCN are used for processing steel and cast iron, and TiAIN can be used for high hardness; when processing stainless steel, choose a coating with anti-adhesion and good thermal conductivity; when processing difficult-to-machine materials such as titanium alloys and nickel-based alloys, the cutting temperature is high and requires Choose coatings such as TiAIN and AITiN that have good heat resistance and high oxidation temperature resistance; CrN coatings can be used in addition to the general TiN for copper processing; wear-resistant coatings such as TiCN should be used for processing high-silicon aluminum alloys; processing and synthesis The material should be diamond coating or TiN or TiCN coating.

The selection of coatings is shown in the table below:

Steel cast iron Generally, TIN and TiCN coatings are used, and TAIN or AITIN is used for high-speed cutting, hard cutting, and dry cutting.
Stainless steel Choose TiN or TiCN coating, and TAIN should be used for carbide cutting tools.
Titanium alloy/nickel-based alloy Choose TiN, TiCN, TiAIN coatings, among which TiN is used for low speed and TAIN can be used for high speed; PCBN grade with better toughness + TiAIN or AITIN coating; TCN is suitable for milling
Copper alloy aluminum alloy Choose general TN, TiCN coatings or special ZrN, CrN or DLC coatings: TiCN coatings for processing high-silicon aluminum alloys, and diamond coatings for high cutting speeds.
synthetic materials Generally, TiN and TCN coatings are used; glass fiber and carbon fiber reinforced plastics should use diamond coatings.
